Post Conference Note

The International Conference “Universities’ Third Mission: Indicators and Good Practices” that was held in Dublin, Ireland, February 2-3, 2012, organised by the Lifelong Learning Project European Indicators and Ranking Methodology for University Third Mission (E3M), gathered hundred experts on Higher Education from more than 20 countries from Europe, Africa and North America.


Participants shared their personal experiences and discussed issues around the provision, encouragement and measurement of the Third Mission of universities with very successful results.

The Conference provided a platform for ongoing discussion between the participants, which was stimulated by a number of talks:

  • William Oakes, Director of the EPICS Program & Associate Professor,Department of Engineering Education at Purdue University talked about the importance of Third Mission and its opportunities and challenges.
  • Andrés Carrión, E3M project coordinator and director of the Centre for Quality and Change Management at Valencia University of Technology, presented the main details of the E3M project.
  • Jan Sadlak, president of IREG Observatory, talked about educational rankings and measuring methodologies with special focus on measuring Third Mission.
  • Marek Rebow, Head of Research, College of Engineering and Built Environment Dublin Institute of Technology, Tuija Laurén, Head of Training, University of Helsinki and Alfredo Soeiro, University of Porto gave a comprehensive overview of indicators, best practices and policy issues for individual domains: Technology Transfer & Innovation, Continuing Education and Social Engagement.
  • Christopher Padfield, Supernumerary Fellow and Director of Studies in Engineering, Trinity Hall Cambridge, introduced the Draft Green Paper ‘Fostering and measuring third Mission in Higher Education’, which was then explored in detail by participants during group discussions.  
  • Finally, Eucharia Meehan, Head of Research Programmes, Higher Education Authority, Ireland, provided a conference summary pinpointing the main messages arising from the discussions.
  • The summary was followed by a closing remark by Mike Murphy, Director and Dean, College of Engineering & Built Environment, Dublin Institute of Technology, who also opened the event.
